POLISH CUP
IDSF INTERNATIONAL OPEN LATIN
IDSF OPEN STANDARD

The beginning of the school year coinicides with the start of the dance season. Singapore World Championship excitement is over. Our season commencement is undoubtedly The Polish Cup - Warsaw 2003. The tournament takes place at almost the same time as The World Championships in "Latin" in Saint Petersburg and Berlin World Championships of the Youth in ten dances. Shortly before the Warsaw tournament we received good news - Kamil Urbaniak and Katarzyna Kapral were fourth in Berlin. The news from Russia was less impressive: Marcin Hakiel and Magda Soszynska were among 48 best pairs i n the world, and Derek Hough and Aneta Piotrowska among 24.

Marek Chojnacki           Anyway, let's come back to Warsaw. There had been a lot of noise about the Polish Cup a few months before. Marek Chojnacki had been already sending leaflets advertising the tounament and talking to hundreds of different people. Due to their generosity and help the leaflets reached England, Russia, Austria, Italy and Germany in summer.
Adam Socik's website twist.taniec.info provided the Internet support of the event. Open and clear information on "twist.home" was supplemented every day. Mr Socik kept informing the dance world about preparations to the event.

The fourth edition of the Polish Cup was held under the auspices of The Polish Parliament Speaker - Marek Borowski and the city of Warsaw President - Lech Kaczynski. We could only wish they had personally attended the event. Nevertheless, we hosted such personalities as: the members of the Honorary Committee of the Polish Cup, representatives of the Bemowo mayor, people representing the City of Warsaw Promotion Office, representatives of the Polish Olympic Committee and Polish Ministry of Education and Sport.
The programme of the Cup promised a great event. Besides, other names in the programme suggested something impressive. I checked some of those big names. "Zycie Warszawy" (The Life of Warsaw") was to be the media supporter. I am not sure whether there was anyone from this newspaper there. Perhaps they will write an article about it.
TVP3 - I did not see any cameras in the ballroom. Probably they were too busy that weekend to cover a cat or dog exhibition or the television solicitor got tired of writing responses to the Polish Dance Association Chairman's protests? At least three days before the tournament the Cup was advertised to be aired on regional TV. Marek Chojnacki invited everyone to watch it.
Among the tournament organizers we could also find Sport Dance Federation. But what role did it play being together with PTT (Polish Dance Association) a coorganizer of the event? Sport Dance Federation has been very reluctant lately to reveal its activities, especially in the struggle to make the Polish dance structures more sport-like. Shall we learn anything about it soon?

This year's Polish Cup squeezed into its progamme two additional events: The Mazovian Region Championships and Polish Professional Championships. Was it right or wrong? In my opinion the latter. The Regional Championships turned out to be just a small addition to another tournament. Probably, the lack of compulsory participation in the Regional Championships made the tournament a minor one. Maybe it was not such a foolish idea to force contestants to take part in the regional championships? So what? Even this year all categories had their champions.

In this so called "meanwhile" on Saturday the new Polish Champion in professional Latin was picked. Five pairs competed in that category.
Michał Malitowski i Joanna Leunis Joanna Leunis

Konrad Dąbski i Joanna Dąbska

Konrad Dąbski & Joanna Dąbska - 4 place

Marcin Wrzesiński i Anna Głogowska

Marcin Wrzesiński & Anna Głogowska - 5 place

The Latin tournament of professionals was a good opportunity to see last year's world champions in "Show" and this year's finalists in Blackpool - Joanna Leunis and Maichal Malitowski.

On Sudany three pairs ( Oh, yes - three!) competed to seize the title. Marcin and Sylwia Scieglinski became the Polish Champions,
Marcin i Sylwia Ścieglińscy

the second place went to Tomasz Konury and Daniela Serio, and the third to Jacek Guzowski and Anna Guzowska.
That is why Polish Professional Dance Association was absent among the organizers of the tournament.
